Teaching and Mentoring

UC Davis PACOTE and Use of Force Project Undergraduate Labs, 2015-2020

Undergraduate Mentoring

In addition to teaching at UC Davis, I mentor undergraduate research labs where student volunteers gain opportunities to work in a university research setting. Undergraduate students learn spreadsheet and data management skills, practice data coding, and assist with project data collection.

My participation in these labs is a demonstration of my commitment to diversifying research opportunities in the social sciences. Through these labs I have had the opportunity mentor undergraduate students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, and first-generation backgrounds.

Criminal Justice Systems

Course Description: This course examines three components of the criminal justice system: policing, prosecution, and punishment. Across these components we will ask: What does the criminal justice system look like? How is it organized? What are the different institutions involved? How is decision making shaped by these institutions? How is the system maintained? How do systems change?

Social Problems

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the study of social problems from a sociological viewpoint, primarily through social institutions, or complex sets of rules that organize daily life in formal and informal ways. In the rest of the course we will look at specific social problems related to the institutions of race, class, and gender. This course will analyze the roles these institutions take in the construction and resolution of social problems. For each problem we will tackle a core list of questions: What is the problem? What are the causes of the problem? For whom is it viewed as a problem? What can be done about the problem?
